Follow-up Photos — and a Contest
Here are two updates on my entries of March 12 and 13.

1. (See “Long Winter’s Journey into Spring) After more than a week of house arrest and puny little walks around the block while his leg was healing, Cardiman got three days in a row of hikes in the woods — two in Owen Sound and one here along the local river. Friday’s hike was an hour long; Saturday’s and Sunday’s were more like two each. All that fresh air and exercise has been doing both him and me a world of good.

2. (See “Cute and Conscientious” and “Symbol of the Turtle”) Guess what? All three species of my family symbolically adopted a baby sea turtle in my honour! Here it is now, reading my latest entry. I think there should be a name-and-genderize-the-sea-turtle-stuffy contest. Winner gets…umm…uh… How ’bout, winner gets to name any topic, and I’ll write a 500-word tale about it? Deadline March 30!

my official entry: “micmac” - he’s a male

Oh, pick me, pick me… here’s what I think is a perfect (gender-neutral) name: Sandy.

Ha, ha! Love the two entries above. I’ve got nothing..ok how about Seamus and he is a young sea lad.

Great entries so far! A First Nations reference, a habitat pun, and the name of Tracey McBean’s best friend (yes, the Australian cartoon plays here on TVO, the provincial educational channel).
Eyegillian, you’re going to have to get off the weir and choose a gender, in order to complete your entry. It won’t matter for the name judging — I just need to know, when I ask the little one a question, whether he’s answering, or she is. Thanks!
I will present all entries to a few non-blogging acquaintances to determine the winner.

I am glad the Cardiman (!) is out and about again.
My contest entry. How about Spike? That’s got some attitude at least. Now, gender. What does gender mean? Oh, yeah. Gender is green.

Gender is “neutral”? Gender is “green”? I haven’t decided yet whether to put on my Best Teacher Look*, or pout. Ever seen a turtle pout? It’s not a pretty sight.
*Phrase copped from “Thomas’ Snowsuit” by Robert Munsch.

OK, OK, so the little one can’t be an it. So, let’s try the rational aproach: dogs are boys, cats are girls, toads are boys… oh dear, this is going to take forever. Well, I’ll just have to guess: Sandy is… a girl!
March 26, 2008 at 7:50 am
Oh, gender means boy or girl! Who knew? I’m gonna say…….tomboy!
March 26, 2008 at 8:52 am
Mu-u-uch better. Spike the tomboy would definitely be the butchiest member of this household, except maybe for the cat. And Sandra, not Alexander, makes the boy-girl odds 50-50 now. This is fun!

Many years ago I had a very good friend who was a world renowned expert on reptiles who was blind. Bruce had the greatest collection of reptiles and amphibians (he got rid of all his poisonous snakes when he lost his sight) and I remember there being a family of Mata-Mata (sp?) turtles named Tiny Tim and Miss Vicky. So once you decide on “its” gender - those are my choices! Actually Tiny Tim may work for both!

JANE, a lurker, says:
“For your dear little turtle, I’m voting that it’s a girl named Shelley. Her picture just looks feminine to me.
If I try to comment on your site, or even read the comments, my Internet crashes. This could be something in our network.
Cheers!”
So now we have a vote FOR a Shelley as well as a vote BY a Shelley. The suspense is growing!

Myrtle coz it rhymes with turtle. Of course myrtille doesn’t rhyme too well with tortue, but that can’t be helped. So we’ll just not mention Myrtle on our trip to Paris!

All right, a lucky number seven names on our ballot! Midnight Samoan Time is coming up, so any reluctant lurkers out there will have to speak up, or forever hold their peace… at least until we make up a new game.

Oops, me again. Apparently I’ve built up some immunity against hyperlinks, and didn’t even notice the one in goodbear’s comment above. That’s a beautiful/funny story, goodbear, with a lot of wisdom for little mud-coloured Turtle. Now, when I feel depressed/oppressed by a certain vociferous group, I’ll try to think of them as fickle, overprivileged Canada honkers and tell my tales to willing, quiet friends.
