The things one learns! That's just so incredibly gross and disgusting, I can't stop laughing! E.g. will be glad to know she got it right in naming him Gerald, not Geraldine. Thanks for the science lesson, Themarvelousinnature!

Haven't a clue! I tried looking it up in the couple guides I have, but couldn't find an easy match. I can tell you it's a male, however, because the two little appendages in front of the face (the pedipalps) have large mitts on them. When mating, male spiders ejaculate into their "mitt" and then insert it into the female's genital opening. Very romantic, eh? This may be why some female spiders eat their mates.... ;)

I don't know what he is, Goodbear. Maybe Themarvelousinnature might know. We first noticed it in the bathroom in mid-winter, and hadn't the heart to set it out in the snow. We got so used to seeing it (or more probably, them) around that we missed it if we didn't see it, and E.g. went so far as to name it Gerald. It's finally drinking-glass-and-stiff-paper season; mind you, Gerald is such an affable little fellow that he didn't require a glass but just crawled onto a length of toilet paper for his ride outdoors.
