The Cardigan Nestling
E.g. wanted a new baby for Mother’s Day. No problem, I said, it’s the perfect weekend to go dogsnesting. The puppies are just the right age about now, and it’s a lovely day for a drive in the country. Why don’t we take Jack and his mum along, too?
So we scouted the trees…
…while E.g. kept her eyes on the road.
Local landowner Doug answers Jack’s enquiry. “We had a West Highland Terrier rookery last year, but so far nothing this Spring.”
Finally, our faithful nestlinghound Cai finds a tree! Jack acts as spotter while Lavenderbay starts up the rescue rope.
E.g. approves of the new nestling.
Safe in the arms of Mama.
Buckled in for the ride home.
Fergus’s new nest…
… complete with foliage-patterned blankie.
E.g. after a full two hours’ sleep! Ain’t motherhood grand!

So THAT is why that rope is on the tree!
Enjoy your baby..and give him a hug from me!

That’s a really great travelogue… although I would personally have left off the final photo. I hope the new “warm cute puppy” feeling lasts a long while — at least until everything has settled into a sane routine!

Yes, Shelley, when I looked at the photos, suddenly it all made sense!
Is Cai totally infatuated with Fergus? Well, not totally… or maybe it’s closer to totally not… But he’ll come round eventually. As I said to Shelley this morning, Cai and Fergus both went to bed last night with snouts and tails intact. I did see a look of commiseration pass between Cai and Cuca, though!
Of course you wouldn’t have posted that final photo, Eyegillian — which is why I had to. Happy Mother’s Day!

Wow, Fergus is a super pup! Love that brindle coat. That photo of him on his back is so cute I have to look away to catch my breath! I am so happy for you all!

Thank you, Checkers! E.g. discovered this afternoon that the Cardi on the coasters that Jack brought back from a trip to San Francisco look just like Fergus, so he must be a pretty handsome dude.

Awwwwwww. The photo of him sleeping on his back, will have to be part of his baby book - I just want to eat him up. I hope he doesn’t grow into an unusually surprising giant Corgi like Milo did. They’re much cuter when you can pick them up and snuggle them, rather than the other way around. Congrats Lavenderbay and family!

so….you made it through mother’s day with the new little guy!
any advice?
i go look at a litter of 19 day old border collie rescue pups on wednesday. i know they’ll be adorable, but….they’re all going to have short hair. am i a total jerk? but i’ve always wanted a b.c. with long hair…a rough coat. or will i love her no matter what? sure. it’s just what i had my heart set on.
have you seen checker’s brother, nash? he has the same brindle and similar markings as fergus.

Thanks, Alyson! Shelley used to breed Irish Wolfhounds as well as Cardis, but to my knowledge there were never any accidental long-legged corgis or prick-eared wolfhounds.
I dunno what’ll happen on Wednesday, Goodbear, but I can tell you that we were interested in getting a brindle Cardi the first time around, and got a sable instead… and we love him. And the second time around, Gillian was hoping for a female, and got a male… and she loves him. If you want a long-haired B&W, period, you’ll settle for a Shih Tzu, right? It’s the Border Collie behaviour that’s so wonderful — almost as great as a Mandarin Collie.

What a cutie. That shot of him lying upside down on the blankie is priceless.

Thanks, Bobbie! Now all we need is a little goldworm-plated bubble coral collar and he’ll be the handsomest dude on the planet! (elucidation here: http://therightblue.com/2008/05/bubble-coral-plus.html )

Wow, look what happens when I pop out for a couple of week. Congratulations on the new bub. What a beautiful fellow he is and so happy with his new family. Cai and Fergus in the back of the car asleep is beyond cute.

Thanks, Livingisdetail! I didn’t want to announce the new puppy until I knew which one Shelley had chosen for us (for more discussion on “who chooses, and why”, go here: http://blog.yasashiikuma.com/?p=161#comments ).
There was some grumbling from Cai before he accepted Fergus’s sleeping on him, but puppy wouldn’t settle down until he had snuggled into the other dog — and it’s a two-hour ride home from Shelley’s place.
