Hi, everybody! I’m back. Tomorrow, I’ll tell you about our camping trip to Bon Echo, and maybe show you some souvenirs we brought back (besides the multitudinous tiny red welts) . This morning, before heading out into the blogosphere to catch up with your news, I’m posting the results of Turtle’s Caption Contest.
First, I must state that no favouritism was shown. E.g. copied out the captions for me last night, mixing up the order so that the multiple entries were separated from each other. I didn’t look at your e-mails or the behind-the-scenes comment page. And – something that really surprises me – of the eight captions, I was able to guess only two of the authors.
Second, it was tough making a decision. Running jokes, in-jokes, and lyrics were all represented in the entries. It came down to two captions. I decided to sleep on it, but this morning am no more decided than last night.
Both captions refer directly to the photo — the expression on the dog’s face, the paper towels, the er, um, work-in-progress appearance of the living room. (Because I thought the paper towels were unclear, I mentioned them in the tags. ) If you’ve recently had puppy experience, you might recognize part of a pee pad in the lower right corner. One caption made me laugh more, and the other was more succinct.
So — okay, you guessed it — I’m gonna hafta give them both a first. Congratulations to Themarvelousinnature and Shelley, who wrote, respectively, the longest and the second-shortest captions. And since Cardis are short at the shoulder and long in the backbone, it all somehow makes sense.
Below is the photo again, with the two winning captions intercalated in red and blue.
“Mom, before you come around the couch, “Mom, I just want to let you know the puppy that my being here is entirely coincidental. is at it But you might need these.” again.”
Once again, congratulations to you both! Please leave a comment on this entry, to give me your chosen topic for a 500-word piece.
Your limericks, starting with Mutual Friend Jane’s chosen word “radar”, will begin going up on the sidebar on July 21st. The one for The Aged Cat, who suggested “le Pont Neuf”, is the final one in the current queue, to be posted July 14th.
Thank you all for participating!

Congratulations to the two winners for your hilarious (and all-too-accurate) captions!

Ah puppyhood
Enjoy it while you can and it will be over soon enough, and they can be returned permanently to the paper towel holder.
I’ll be needing to buy shares in “Bounty” in a week – 20 lb puppy vs 5 lb puppy
Okay, now your going to make me think for a while, so I can come up with a subject to make you think…..I’ll think while weeding the Martian landscape today.
Glad you’re enjoying the Halvah and that the little fart is feeling better!

OK, got one for you.
Your choice – either “The Weeds among the flowers” or “The flowers amongst the weeds”

Hey, no fair making me think!

I thought everyone submitted good captions! But pleased you found mine appropriate!
How about this topic for the 500 words: the prettiest place on earth.

You’re on, Themarvelousinnature!
It’s interesting how both topics deal with the ground in one way or another. Now I can pretend I’m a journalist who knows how to dig up the dirt!

Hey good choice on the winners. It’s funny, I have no idea if “Bags, you’re it” is Aussie or English or used anywhere else but I know I used to say it when playing chasey / tag as a child.

I inferred the meaning, Livingisdetail, but we didn’t use it in my neck of the woods when I was growing up. I think I’ve already seen it as well on either your or Alyson’s blog. Maybe it’s an example of Cockney rhyming slang? Might be interesting to find out!
